Palatine, IL … Legislation to allow global positioning satellite tracking to be used on domestic abuse offenders who violate orders of protection, sponsored by State Representative Suzie Bassi, was signed into law today.

“I am proud to have sponsored this legislation and very pleased that both Republicans and Democrats could come together across party lines to pass this much-needed legislation and that the Governor quickly signed it into law. My only wish is that we could have accomplished this in time to have helped Cindy Bischof,” said Bassi, who worked directly with the Bischof family in drafting the legislation that increases protection for victims of domestic violence.

Springfield, IL … A group of House Republican lawmakers today called for new protections to safeguard victims of domestic violence following the murder in Elmhurst of Cindy Bischof.   House Republicans are pushing for global positioning satellite (GPS) tracking of offenders who violate orders of protection.

“When an ex-boyfriend began to stalk and harass Cindy, she did everything the law allows and law enforcement did what they were supposed to do.  She took out an order of protection and moved from place-to-place but her stalker ignored the orders and in the end found her and took her life,” said State Representative Dennis Reboletti (R-Elmhurst), a former Will County Prosecutor.  “If law enforcement and Cindy had advanced warning perhaps her life could have been saved.”

“What happened to Cindy Bischof is truly tragic. We need stricter, stronger laws that really protect victims, not give them a false sense of safety. Cindy’s brother, Michael, is the one who suggested electronic monitoring in these types of cases,” said State Representative Suzie Bassi (R-Palatine). Chicago, IL … Stating the new state budget is nothing but a political hoax, State Representative Suzie Bassi (R-Palatine) today voted against the Democrat spending plan that leaves critical funding shortfalls.

Democrats passed an unbalanced budget without identifying how they are going to pay for it. The FY09 budget, opposed by the House Republicans, includes $2 billion in new spending.

“There is not enough revenue growth to cover the obligations we already have much less new obligations that the Democrats falsely promised state agencies, groups and universities,” said Bassi. “The Democrats promised millions of dollars to these entities knowing there is not enough money to pay for these programs. This is nothing but a political game played just in time for campaign season to begin.”
